The Chesterton softball team moved into tonight’s IHSAA Sectional Championship game with a solid 9-2 victory over Portage on Wednesday night.

The Trojans will face Valparaiso, a 15-0 winner over Michigan City, at 4:30 p.m.

“Move on,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “It doesn’t matter what you do right, or what you do wrong, as long as you end up one run better.”

Chesterton scored three runs in the top of the first as Maddie Snemis reached on a one-out single. After a pop up, Lexi Benko doubled to right-center field to score Snemis.

A walk to Micaela Iacovetti put runners on first and second before Lauren Anderson ripped a double that scored courtesy runner Mae Mallon and Iacovetti for a 3-0 lead.

“It was nice to see some kids hit the ball again,” Hopson said. “(Against Hobart), we didn’t have many.”

The Trojans scored three more runs in the third inning as Kristi Stevenson singled to start the frame and moved to second on Benko’s sacrifice bunt.

A two-out double by Anderson, her second of the game, scored Stevenson and Anderson would eventually score on a wild pitch. Cassidy Grimm singled and scored after stealing second when Noelle Michael reached on an error.

“(Portage pitcher Autumn Music) was pitching outside and we’ve worked hard all year to hit the ball where it is pitched,” Hopson said. “It was nice to see the work pay off.”

Portage finally got to Trojan starter Benko in the third inning as they loaded the bases, but scored just one time.

Shelby Grimm drew a walk to start the fourth inning, stole second and stole third before scoring on an errant throw from the catcher.

The Indians scored their only other run in the fourth inning before Chesterton scored solo runs in the sixth and seventh innings to set the final score.

Snemis walked and scored on Benko’s single in the sixth, while Cassidy Grimm was hit by a pitch in the seventh and scored on LaFreniere’s single.

Benko worked all seven innings for the Trojans in the circle and struck out eight in garnering the victory.

“Lexi did a nice job,” Hopson said. “We had a few little squirters that went through, but they didn’t really hit anything very hard tonight.”
