Trojan Softball just misses in 3-2 loss at Crown Point

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton softball team battled and gave themselves chances, but dropped a 3-2 Duneland Athletic Conference decision at Crown Point on Thursday.

“I told the girls after the game that we played a great game,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We made some mistakes and they made some too. The bottom line is that tonight they were one run better.”

Crown Point got on the scoreboard first with a three-run rally in the third against Chesterton starter Lauren Anderson.

The Bulldogs sandwiched a pair of singles around an out. Zoie Rettig’s shot to first was misplayed scoring two runs and Hannah Grady’s RBI single made it 3-0.

“We made some communication mistakes that led to some runners advancing when they should have been stopped at first,” Hopson said. “We will eventually get that cleaned up when everyone gets comfortable with the people around them. We’ve got a lot of players returning, but several of them are in new positions.”

The Trojans responded in the fifth when Faith Matta and Kari LaFreniere singled. Shelby Grimm’s triple left field scored both runners.

“I was pleased that we responded after they scored,” Hopson said. “We got two runners in scoring position in the fourth and then put three hits together to score in the fifth.”

Chesterton threatened with a runner at third in the sixth and runners on second and third in the seventh inning, but couldn’t get the game-tying hit.

“To me that says the girls are not afraid,” Hopson said. “They know they can hit the cover off the ball. I am confident that we are going to be where we want to be at the end of the season.”

In the circle, Anderson worked the first 2 2/3 innings and struck out four. Lexi Benko threw the final 3 1/3 innings and struck out three.

The Trojans return to the field tonight when they head to Portage for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
