The high-powered Chesterton offense disappeared late in the season and
Monday night’s Sectional opener was no different.
The Trojans managed just one hit and only tallied two base runners in
dropping a 2-0 Sectional opening decision at Crown Point to the host
“We’ve been in an offensive slump for about two weeks,” Chesterton coach
LouAnn Hopson said. “There is just some sort of block there mentally that we
haven’t been able to overcome.”
Crown Point scored an unearned run against Chesterton starter Sydney Cooley
in the bottom of the first thanks in part to two infield errors. Cooley
allowed just three hits and struck out two in working the first 4 2/3
innings in the circle.
“Sydney did a good job of keeping us in the game,” Hopson said. “She ran out
of gas. They hit a couple of balls hard and she got a little wild, but I
thought she threw well.”
Miranda Elish cruised through the Trojan lineup to start the game, retiring
the first eight batters before a Sarah Richards single in the third. Megan
Matheny reached on an error in the fourth as the only other Chesterton
player to reach base.
“We know she’s good,” Hopson said. “She’s got a good fast ball and a
change-up that’s given us trouble all three times we faced her.”
The Trojans finished the season with a 21-7 overall record.
