A late Munster rally prevented a regular season-ending victory.

The visiting Mustangs scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to upend the Chesterton softball team 3-2 on Friday night.

“It was a great game,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “We had several really good games this week. We just didn’t win this one. I think we are in the right place for a Sectional run.”

The Trojans opened the scoring in the third inning with a two-out solo home run from Shelby Grimm.

Munster tied the game in the fourth with the aid of a two-out walk and a pair of singles.

Chesterton retook the lead in the fifth when Cassidy Grimm singled and went to second when the ball got past the centerfielder. Two outs later, Shelby Grimm was hit by a pitch and Maddie Snemis doubled to score Cassidy Grimm.

Munster’s rally in the seventh started with back-to-back singles to start the inning. A ground out put runners on second and third before an intentional walk loaded the bases. A line drive to right scooted through to the wall and two runners scored.

In the bottom of the seventh, pinch-hitter Hayley Edmonds drew a walk with one out. Shelby Grimm was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second, but a pop up and a ground out ended the game.

Lexi Benko took the loss for the Trojans after working seven innings and striking out seven.

Chesterton returns to the field tonight when they start Sectional play in Merrillville against Hobart at 4:30 p.m.
