Trojan Softball falls at Crown Point

The Chesterton softball team had a chance Friday night at Crown Point, but this time they couldn’t get the big hit when they needed it.

Crown Point scored two second-inning runs and made them stand up in getting a 2-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over the Trojans.

“My disappointment is that we out-hit them,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “I think that CP made a couple of real heads up plays, hustle plays, on defense that took away some opportunities. I hope our girls take note of that.

“We’re capable of making those type of plays too.”

Crown Point scored both of its runs with two outs in the second inning after a leadoff single started the rally. An RBI double and a bleeder just past the outstretched arm of shortstop Jaren Lynch resulted in an early lead.

“It’s always disappointing when the bottom of a team’s order is the part that beats you,” Hopson said. “I thought Sydney (Cooley) pitched a good game and Megan (Tymorek) did a good job in relief. You can’t give extra outs.”

The Trojans rallied in the seventh as Mallory McKee started the frame with a single. After consecutive fielder’s choices, CHS had Sammie Howard on first with two down.

A single by Lynch moved Howard to second and she scored on a single by Sarah Richards. On the play, Lynch went to third and Richards moved to second on the throw, bringing up Cooley.

“When Sydney came up in the 7th, the CP coach went out to the mound,” Hopson said. “I told Sydney, that if it were me, I would either walk her or try to get her to fish for something out of the zone. The first pitch was over her head and the next two were outside.

“They called the 3-0 pitch a strike and the catcher looked stunned. I don’t think it was supposed to be a strike. They decided to go after her and she fouled off several pitches.”

Eventually, Cooley swung and missed at a high fastball to end the game.

“I know she felt bad, but she will learn from it,” Hopson said. “If the situation were the same tomorrow, I would want her in the box again.”
