Watching it, you wouldn’t have thought a big score was coming.

The Chesterton gymnastics team appeared to be struggling as the night rolled on Tuesday night, but you couldn’t tell by the cheering at the end of the night as the Trojans posted a 111.875-104.975 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Michigan City.

“We still haven’t had a perfect meet,” Chesterton coach Dawn Matthys said. “Right now, we are competing to better ourselves. We’re trying to up our own routines and clean them up.”

The Trojans won every event with Sophie Hunzelman taking first on the Beam (9.75) and the Vault (9.50).

“Sophie’s beam routine was beautiful and flawless,” Matthys said. “I’ve been on her about her series and she’s worked really hard on it. Tonight it was clean.”

Hunzelman was backed on the Beam by Lexi Avey’s 9.30 and on the Vault by Jordan Bush’s 9.45.

“Lexi is always good on the Beam. She’s my anchor because I know she’ll stay on it and deliver for us,” Matthys said. “We spent a whole practice on vault. Sophie and Jordan both added the corrections we’ve tried to add to those vaults.”

Bush won the Floor with a 9.60, while Brittney Troup won the Bars with a 9.425.

“Bars was our weakness last year too, but we hit it in practice,” Matthys said. “We keep dancing around having a good bar set as a team.”

Hunzelman won the All-Around with a 37.375 total edging Bush (37.20).

“Practice makes perfect,” Matthys said. “The routines are done. Now we just need enough repetition to clean them up.”

Chesterton returns to competition on Saturday when they host the CHS Invitational beginning at 11 a.m.
