The numbers just keep getting bigger and more impressive.

The Chesterton girls swim team won its 19th consecutive Duneland Athletic Conference title on Saturday at LaPorte.

The Trojans amassed 585 points and won every event to best second place Lake Central (374). Valparaiso (305), Crown Point (292), Portage (179), LaPorte (158), Michigan City (118) and Merrillville (46) followed.

“After the quality of kids that graduated last year, this is really something special,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “We have had kids that really didn’t have a whole lot of varsity experience that have stepped into different roles incredibly this year. We’ve had great upperclassmen leadership and our culture is really good right now.

“The kids know what to expect and how to get there.”

Figuring out what to expect is easy in the CHS program as Kinel racked up his 50th career DAC title in his 38th year as head coach.

“He’s very humble, so he’s not going to give you much,” senior Lauryn Kallay said. “He’s the backbone of our whole program. Honestly, the things he does for us, you have no idea. He’s such a huge part of this and everything we’ve done.”

Kallay, the DAC Co-MVP along with Lake Central’s Savanna Spears, did her part by winning the 100 Free (52.05) and the 200 Free (1:51.74).

“We won every event here,” Kinel said. “I don’t know that we’ve ever done that before. That’s really awesome and a credit to our kids. I can go up and down the lineup and tell you about great swims. We had some awesome performances today.”

The other double event winner for the Trojans was Jaclyn Klimczak with wins in the 200 IM (2:05.86) and the 100 Back (55.50).

“Our depth showed up like it always does and our front-runners were there today too,” Kinel said. “This gave us some confidence heading into the post-season.”

The Trojans also went 1-2-3 in the 200 Free, 100 Fly, 500 Fly and 100 Back. Olivia Kroeger won the 100 Fly (57.61) and Maisyn Klimczak won the 500 Free (5:02.19).

“I think the 100 Fly kids gave us a ton of emotion starting the second half of the day,” Kinel said. “Olivia’s race was great and Sophia Gill’s never been under 1:01 and she goes :59 low. Abbie Koster was great there too.”

The other individual winners in the pool for Chesterton were Jadah Eshenauer in the 50 Free (24.48) and Jenn Gillen in the 100 Breast (1:06.28).

“Jadah had great races today,” Kinel said. “Jenn Gillen struggled a bit this year, so it was really big for her to swim well today. She’s a big meet swimmer. She rose to the occasion today.”

Not to be outdone was the 1-2-4 finish by the Trojan divers. Piper Downing won the event (391.05), followed by runner-up Sarah Schmipf (354.55) and Marina Weinberg (331.65).

“I can’t say enough about our divers,” Kinel said. “I don’t think we’ve ever had three kids place that high together. I’m really excited about that.”

The Trojans also won all three relays beginning with the 200 Medley group of Jaclyn Klmiczak, Gillen, Kroeger and Eshenauer in 1:47.14.

Other relay winners were the 200 Free team of Eshenauer, Maisyn Klimczak, Abi Raines and Kallay (1:39.66) and the 400 Free quartet of Kallay, Maisyn Klimczak, Jaclyn Klimczak and Lauren Unruh (3:34.98).

“The kids are executing the things we are working on in practice, and as a coach, that’s all you can expect,” Kinel said.

On a day where multiple milestones were reached, Kinel remained himself.

“Certainly, you don’t think about things like that when you get into coaching. It’s fun, and I’m sure when the season is over, I’ll sit down and I’ll look back at it like ‘wow’. But right now, we’ve got bigger fish to fry,” Kinel said. “It’s a nice accolade, but it really shows the great support of our school, our feeder system with the Duneland Swim Club and a great administration that has let me do my thing for a long time.

“There are a whole lot of people, especially the kids over the years, that deserve the credit for that.”
