The Chesterton girls basketball team forced 42 turnovers and allowed just 17 shots from the field in picking up an easy 57-13 non-conference victory over Hanover Central on Friday night.

“We’ve had games where we’ve only played seven people and it’s nice to get a night where everyone got substantial playing time,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “If you’re pretty good, you should get a game like that every once in awhile.”

The Trojans allowed just three shots from the field in forcing 11 first quarter turnovers as they built a 13-0 lead, including a pair of 3-pointers from Sarah Dzierba.

The lead reached 28-0 and the turnover total hit 25 before Hanover’s Amanda Schreiber made a free throw with 2:22 left in the half. The lead pushed to 31-1 on an Evelyn Pabon triple before the Wildcats first basket came to end the second quarter.

“We keep trying to tell the kids that you can’t play to the score,” Campbell said. “You have to keep playing the way you play and keep your intensity level up. I thought they did a really good job of that tonight.”

Chesterton continued the onslaught in the third quarter with a 12-0 run to make the lead 48-8 after three periods.

Offensively, Hailey Vale led the Trojans with 6 points, while Courtney Krol (11 points) and Dzierba (11 points) joined her in double figures.

Rounding out the scoring were Ashley Craycraft (6 points), Pabon (6 points), Maddie Scott (4 points), Haley Moore (2 points) and Marney Sisson (1 point).

“We’ve never had a game where we felt like we weren’t prepared mentally to play,” Campbell said. “That’s a credit to the kids.”

The Trojans were just 21-of-70 (.300) from the field and 6-of-27 from 3-point range. Hanover Central hit just 5-of-17 shots (29 percent) from the field.

Chesterton returns to the court on Wednesday when they travel to the Warsaw Holiday Tournament.
