The Chesterton girls tennis team swept doubles play and got a victory from Jannon Jeffries at No. 3 singles to pick up a 3-2 season-opening victory against Michigan City Marquette on Wednesday afternoon.

“Both doubles teams came through with nice opening matches,” Chesterton coach Gretchen Shinn said. “Jannon Jeffries in singles played well too.”

Christine Lambert and Amanda Gore were the first team off the court with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles over Kim Ziarko and Katie Clancy. Jeffries followed them with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles over senior Allison Griffin.

The match came down to No. 1 doubles as Chesterton’s Cristi Williams and Bharathi Muthusamy won the opening set 6-2, but fell in the second 6-3. A 6-4 victory in the third set by the senior duo pushed the Trojans to the win.

Chesterton (1-0) returns to the court on Saturday when they travel to the Plymouth Tournament beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The Chesterton junior varsity won two singles matches and seven doubles matches to pick up its first win of the season with a 9-2 victory over Michigan City Marquette.

Singles winners included Cassi Moore and Tori Comegys. Doubles winners were Lauren Ingram/Stacey Kammerer, Sara Torabi/Heather Ribar, Olivia Gordon/Shelbie Sullivan, Amanda Stolarz/Lauren Sergent, Tori Comegys/Brittny Stephan and Cassi Moore/Lexi Mischa.
