Trojan Girls Tennis beats Merrillville

The Chesterton girls tennis team opened Duneland Athletic Conference play with a 4-1 victory over Merrillville on Tuesday.

In singles, Milena Veltri cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 against Aysia Kirklen and Leah Rochford beat Makayla Jones 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3.

In doubles, the duo of Olivia Vesling and Hailee Ellenwood beat Faith Collins and Layla Barns 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1. Libby Gibson and Christian Charlson blanked Nijaia Jones and Cheyenne Figueroa 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2.

The Trojans return to the court on Thursday when they host Michigan City beginning at 4:30 p.m.

Singles -- 1. Sydney Jackson (M) def. Peyton Martinson 6-0, 7-5; 2. Milena Veltri def. Aysia Kirklen 6-1, 6-1; 3. Leah Rochford def. Makayla Jones 6-1, 6-0.

Doubles -- 1. Olivia Vesling/Hailee Ellenwood def. Faith Collins/Layla Barns 6-1, 6-1; 2. Libby Gibson/Christian Charlson def. Nijaia Jones/Cheyenne Figueroa 6-0, 6-0.

Record: Chesterton 2-1 (1-0 DAC).

Junior Varsity

Chesterton 8, Merrillville 1

The Chesterton junior varsity swept singles play en route to an 8-1 victory over Merrillville on Tuesday.

In singles, Anna Gardner (No. 1), Emily Haiduc (No. 2) and Rina Hector (No. 3) all won in straight sets.

In doubles, winners included Rachel Byrnside/Lilly Putchaven (No. 1), Greta Schmahl/Maria Schmahl (No. 2), Lauren Sensibaugh/Jenna Aguilar (No. 3), Kassidy Crowell/Lindsey Tucker (No. 4) and Sofia Winski/Kylie Finley (No. 5).
