The Chesterton girls track team didn’t waste any time in picking up an
impressive 128-4 victory over Highland Thursday night.
And in track, that’s a good thing.
“I was really happy with some of the things I saw tonight,” Chesterton coach
Steve Kearney said. “With the weather like it was, we didn’t have great times
in some events, but the competition was there. We were very competitive and I
like to see that.”
The Trojans dominated the field events with 1-2-3 finishes in the high jump,
long jump and pole vault.
“Jenna Norgaard had a great day,” Kearney said. “She made a big step up with
a 4-10 in the high jump and that’s a PR. She ran really well too. It’s nice
to see those kinds of kids stepping up for us.”
Rachel Crawford won the high jump (5-2) with Chrissy Watts finishing second
(5-0). Katie McColly took top honors in the long jump (17-4 1¦2), while
Mallory Przybylinski (2nd, 15-7) and Marissa Crafton (3rd, 15-2) followed.
Michelle Reichsteig won the pole vault (8-6) with Chloe Lawson (8-0) and
Kelley Freeman (8-0) rounding out the sweep.
“I was concerned about our throws and we went 1-2 there,” Kearney said. “It’s
not so much that we went 1-2 as much as our second girl is competing with our
first. We’re getting a little depth there.”
Aris Ringas won the discus (86-9) with Elizabeth Eberhart finishing second
(69-4). In the shot put, Maria Schuster (28-11) took top honors and Eberhart
was second (28-4).
On the track, Brianne Guardiola may have turned in the day’s top performance
in the 300 hurdles, according to Kearney.
“I think the 300 hurdles was probably the highlight of the meet for us
today,” Kearney said. “Brianne had made some big improvements and she’s going
to really be a factor for us.”
Other individual winners for the Trojans included Guardiola ( 110 hurdles),
McColly (100), Riley Trella (1,600), Katie Behrendt (400), Allyson Harvey
(800), Przybylinski (200) and Malorie Crafton (3,200).
“We ran some kids in some off events and didn’t load anybody up too much
today,” Kearney said. “It was nice to get out and just test yourself a little
bit. I’d like to see us on a nice, warm day to see where we really are.”
Chesterton also swept all three relays.
“The 4x100 was fast and clean,” Kearney said. “Those girls are a known
factor. I expect that from them and they did what they are supposed to do.”
