Trojan Girls Hoops falls for the 1st time

Size just proved to be too much.

The Chesterton girls basketball team dropped its first decision of the year 34-31 to East Chicago Central on Tuesday night.

“It’s hard when you are battling 6-foot-5 and 6-foot-3 all night,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “We tried to take (Taiyanna Jackson) away late in the game and they put her on the block and there isn’t much we can do with that.”

Jackson scored, or assisted on, the final six points for the Cardinals as they outscored the Trojans 7-2 in the final 3:30 to pull off the win.

Jackson got two putback baskets and had a steal in the final run.

“It looked like we had somebody open, but she’s so long on the perimeter that she takes a step and steals the pass and is off to the other end,” Campbell said.

The Trojans built a 27-23 lead to start the fourth quarter on a pair of free throws from Emma Schmidt. It was the largest lead of the night for either team.

After Nalani Malackowski made two free throws with 2:06 to play, the Chesterton lead was 31-30, but they wouldn’t score again.

Marney Sisson’s triple as the horn sounded bounced off the back of the rim.

“Now, it’s how do we deal with a loss,” Campbell said. “Do you learn from it or does it change the direction of your season?”

The Trojans hit on just 11-of-46 shots (24 percent) from the field and were 1-13 from 3-point range.

“I thought we hurried and were worried about getting our shot blocked,” Campbell said. “We had good shots and they just didn’t go in.”

Ashley Craycraft led the Trojans with 10 points, while Haley Moore added nine points and Sisson tallied six points in the loss.

Chesterton returns to the court on Friday night when they host Michigan City. The JV game begins at 5:30 p.m.
