The Chesterton girls basketball team picked up a solid 43-39 non-conference victory over Hobart on Tuesday night.

“We made some extra passes and made some shots early on,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “It’s always good when you get out and make some baskets right away. It makes you play a little harder defensively and it just improves everything you do from an energy standpoint.”

The Trojans broke open an 11-8 game midway through the first quarter with a 12-2 run. The lead would grow to 34-19 after three quarters before CHS withstood a Brickie rally.

“They made the nice comeback at the end and we withstood it and got the right person to the foul line,” Campbell said. “With (Zoe) Wilson in the middle we really had to battle her. Natalie Petro did a good job in there and so did Caroline (Puntillo). She’s so good inside it really caused us problems.”

Caroline Puntillo led the Trojans with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor.

Rounding out the scoring for Chesterton were Sarah Richards (1 point), Kelsey Conway (2 points), Kassidy Scott (2 points), Hailee Norton (3 points), Hayley Sekula (2 points), Kayla Mayakovski (5 points, Jocelyn Lipscomb (3 points) and Jordan Wadding (2 points).

“We had some other kids make some baskets and that really helps,” Campbell said. “It was a real team effort for us tonight.”
