Trojan Girls Basketball wins opener

The Chesterton girls basketball team opened its 2020 season with a 65-42 non-conference victory at Munster on Saturday night.

The Trojans never trailed after jumping out to a 6-0 lead and led 16-12 at the quarter break. The lead increased to 31-25 at the half before Chestertonís stifling defense held Munster to just five third quarter points.

Carley Balas led the Trojans with 22 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor, while Nalani Malackowski added 14 points to go with six assists.

Rounding out the scoring for Chesterton were Emma Schmidt (8 points), Emma Pape (4 points), Liz Pokorney (4 points), Ciara Bonner (3 points), Ingrid Hurst (2 points), Emily Richardson (2 points), Sophia Raffin (2 points), Katelynn Carr (2 points) and Lauren Davis (2 points).

The Trojans open the home portion of the schedule on Tuesday night when they host Hammond Morton. The JV game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.

Junior Varsity

Munster 39, Chesterton 25

The Chesterton junior varsity dropped its opening contest of the season 39-25 to Munster

Ciara Bonner, Maizy Swanson and Amani Brown led the Trojan offense with four points, while Bridget Raffin, Chloe Wisniewski and Kristina Kokot added three points each.

Giana Raffin and Delaney King each tallied two points in the loss.
