The Trojans allowed
just 123 yards and seven first downs as they racked up a 15-0 Duneland
Athletic Conference victory at Lake Central on Friday.
“Really excited to
get back into the win column,” Chesterton coach Mark Peterson said. “We did
some really nice things defensively tonight. I was really happy for them to
get the shutout. That’s fantastic.”
The defense set the
tone right from the start. After forcing a holding call on the game’s first
place, the Trojans dented the scoreboard on the next play with a safety.
just two first half first downs and LC only had one drive of more than five
plays before the break.
“If we can get
first downs and keep our defense off the field and fresh, we know they’ll
keep us in every game,” Peterson said. “Lots of exciting things on the
horizon for us if we can do that.”
The Trojans scored
their only touchdown of the night following the free kick after the safety
as they drove 48 yards in 11 plays before Bryce Pickering plunged into the
end zone from two yards out.
“We put some things
together offensively tonight,” Peterson said. “Bryce (Pickering) did a great
job at quarterback and we got some good things out of Chris (Mullen) too.
For a freshman, he really did a nice job.”
Pickering ended the
night with 115 yards on 24 carries, while Kody Wilkerson tallied 67 yards on
“Kody runs really
hard and makes people around him play harder,” Peterson said. “That’s what
we’ve been missing. That was awesome for him to have the success he had
offensively and defensively.”
291 yards of offense, 205 came on the ground.
The Trojans return
to the field on Friday when they travel to Crown Point for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
