Learning curve.

That’s what Chesterton football coach Mark Peterson talked about Friday night after his team’s 40-6 loss to Class 5A No. 2 Valparaiso.

“There were some things we saw tonight we are excited about and some things we need to keep working on,” Peterson said. “This was, by far, the best (defensive line) that our (offensive line) has played against and they are going to learn a lot from this film. We just didn’t execute some things upfront and that’s where our growth and maturity with those guys will continue to get better.”

The Vikings opened the scoring with a safety and then put the first of four touchdowns on the board from running back Tommy Burbee for a 9-0 lead.

Valparaiso ran the ball 56 times for 401 yards. Burbee finished with 225 yards on 24 carries. Hayden Vinyard had 137 yards on 16 carries.

“Defensively, we were on the field way too much,” Peterson said. “We couldn’t get off the field a few times we needed to, and offensively, we didn’t give them much rest. As much as they were on offense, they were going to score some points.”

Trojan quarterback Chris Mullen found Bryce Pickering in the end zone in the third quarter from 17 yards away for Chesterton’s lone score. The two-point attempt failed.

Mullen finished the night 13-of-26 through the air for 186 yards, but was sacked nine times.

“Tonight wasn’t on Chris,” Peterson said. “It was on the pressure they put on and protecting him. Chris made good decisions and we ran good routes. We just couldn’t get the ball to them. We’re right there, now we just have to learn and keep getting better.”

The Trojans return to action Friday night at Portage. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

“I love the heart of our kids,” Peterson said. “We never stopped playing and I know we’ll come to practice on Monday and continue to get better and work hard to get ready for Portage.”
