The Chesterton football team gave Class 5A No. 6 Michigan City all it could handle in the Duneland Athletic Conference opener for both teams on Friday, but came up short in a 21-7 loss.

“The thing I love about this team is that they just keep fighting back,” Chesterton coach Mark Peterson said. “We knew at halftime that we were right in it and would have an opportunity. And we did.”

The Trojans trailed just 7-0 at halftime as the Wolves got a 25-yard touchdown pass midway through the second quarter to take the lead.

“We really thought we could do some things in the passing game tonight,” Peterson said. “We’re going to see on film that we did have those opportunities. The first two weeks, we did. Tonight, we didn’t.”

Chesterton did open the fourth quarter with a 5-play, 48-yard drive to tie the score at 7-7. Chris Mullen found Bryce Pickering for 46 yards and Ryan Klespies picked up the final yard and touchdown.

Jackson Syren’s point-after-touchdown was good.

Mullen finished the night 13-of-32 for 186 yards with Pickering catching four passes for 81 yards. Ben Slatcoff caught five passes for 67 yards.

The Wolves marched down the field on a 7-play, 63-yard drive to take a 14-7 lead and added another touchdown with 2:52 to play.

“Our defense rose up again tonight,” Peterson said. “They kept getting us the ball back like they’ve done all year. Offensively, we have to support them better on night’s like this. They’re playing great.”

The Trojans were sacked seven times on the night and turned the ball over three times.

“You take the good with the bad when you throw the ball as much as we do,” Peterson said. “There were a lot of good the first two weeks and not nearly enough tonight. That’s part of the game.”

Chesterton returns to the field on Friday night for Homecoming as they host LaPorte. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
