Another stellar fall sports season at Chesterton High School has found
Trojan student-athletes receiving multiple post-season awards. Among those
awards are All-State, All-Conference and All-District honors.
In football, junior quarterback Alex Beierwalter, junior offensive lineman
Grant Cartwright and senior defensive back Adam Hutnick earned honorable
mention All-State awards from The Associated Press in Class 5A.
Hutnick was also named 1st team Big State All-State as a defensive back
after intercepting a school-record eight passes by the Bloomington
Herald-Times. Classmates Chris Hoenke and Nick Kokinakos both were honorable
mention defensive lineman, while Travis Anderson was an honorable mention
running back/wide receiver.
A trio of CHS juniors including Beierwalter and offensive lineman Sam Jaeger
and Mark VanDenBurgh also garnered special mention Junior All-State honors
from the Herald-Times.
Beierwalter completed 179-of-314 passes for 2.569 yards and 17 touchdowns
this season. He also rushed 87 times for 224 yards and seven TD’s.
VanDenBurgh had 29 pancake blocks and gave up just two sacks in 314 pass
attempts over 11 games.
Hutnick, Hoenke, Kokinakos, VanDenburgh and Beierwalter also earned
All-Duneland Athletic Conference honors.
In soccer, junior Jordan Lewis was named 2nd team All-State by the
Associated Press. Lewis also earned Duneland Athletic Conference Player of
the Year honors.
First team All-District honors went to Lewis, Mark Babcock and Alex Mannen.
Ricky Garvey earned second team All-District honors. On the All-DAC team
were Babcock, Mannen, Garvey, Lewis and Richard Nava.
In boys cross country, Chester Vanek earned 3rd team All-State honors by the
Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches. Teammates Russell
Wilk and David Osborn were named as honorable mention selections.
In boys tennis, Gerard Pannekoek was named to the DAC All-Conference team
and was an Academic All-State honorable mention selection. Nick Kendall and
Aaron Dittman earned All-DAC honors, All-District honors and were honorable
mention All-State. They also were Academic All-State honorable mention
choices.
In volleyball, senior Jessica Sharp was chosen to participate in the Indiana
Coaches of Girls Sports Association North/South senior tryout. Sharp, junior
Stephanie Harrell and junior Amanda Gough were all named to the All-DAC
team.
In girls soccer, the trio of Elaine Schnabel, Kathleen Spears and Kate
McCusker were all named to the All-DAC team.
