Chesterton punctuated a boys cross country season defined by marked beginning-to-end progress with a 16th-place finish in Saturday's state finals at the Lavern Gibson Championship Course.

"In the 21 years I've been doing this, this is the most improved group from their start," Trojans coach Tim Ray said afterward. "We have our State shirts. From our New Prairie times, the top 12 improved 14 minutes from last year. That's averaging over a minute a person. They believed if they put the work in, they'd improve.

“They did the work and they got rewarded. I'm happy for them. I'm very proud of them."

While Fort Wayne Concordia topped Carmel for the title, 93-112, Chesterton posted 377, tying with Jasper, but taking 16th on a sixth-runner tie-breaker. Crown Point (243) led local teams in seventh with Valparaiso 11th (311).

"We were predicted like 22nd," Ray said. "If we had a real good day, I thought we could maybe crack the top 15. We had a pretty solid day, not a great day. We had a couple kids under the weather. They took a couple days off. Runners are creatures of habit and you don't want to take them out of it."

That was the case for usual second man Dylan Draves, who finished fifth for the Trojans and 153rd overall in 17:17. He and Travis Konarski essentially flipped spots with Konarski, Chesterton's typical No. 5, placing second among the team ranks and 87th overall in a personal-best 16:48.2.

"He was a 19-minute guy last year," Ray said. "He's taken three minutes off his time. We have a tight pack, so when one guy doesn't do well, we're kind of mixing and matching."

Elsewhere for Chesterton, Will Shook headed the pack in 49th (16:26.5) with Matthew Streeter 113th (16:58.5), Cole Dolson 122nd (17:22.3), Adam Juestel 165th (17:26.5) and Jackson Tuck 168th (17:29.7).

"Will ran strong again," Ray said. "Cole had a real strong race, too."

The Region went one-two with Lowell's Gabe Sanchez taking the title in 15:28.7, followed by Highland's Lucas Guerra (15:32.9).

In the girls race, Chesterton's Bailey Ranta finished 92nd overall in 19:50.9.

“This season for Bailey was a learning experience,” Chesterton coach Lindsay Moskalick said. “She has a lot of potential, a great work ethic and she is someone who has a bright future. The race didn’t go as planned for her, but that’s running.”
