The Chesterton boys swim team made it two solid decades of dominance on Saturday with their 20th consecutive IHSAA Sectional title.

The Trojans amassed 535 points to beat out Valparaiso (394), Hobart (240), LaPorte (238) and Michigan City (235) in the top five.

““We had an unbelievable Sectional,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “The kids exceeded expectations. They were really in the zone. Just about everybody who had a chance made it to State.

“After Friday, I thought we could be like that.”

Thursday’s prelims were moved to Friday due to fog concerns.

“We really lit it up on Saturday and that’s hard to do back-to-back like that,” Kinel said. “You have to tip your hat to Valpo, Hobart and all the teams there this weekend. It was a great meet with really fast times.”

Chesterton got off to a hot start in the 200 Medley Relay with the group of Danny Schmiegel, Noah VanNevel, Andrew Alders and Ethan Wing winning in a Sectional record time of 1:33.80.

“The Medley Relay was awesome,” Kinel said. “They all did their job. Valpo and LaPorte also made it under the state cut. That’s was a crazy fast race and that’s always fun.”

Double individual event champions for the Trojans included Nick Hanas in the 200 Free (1:40.62) and the 500 Free (4:35.21) and Andrew Alders in the 200 IM (1:49.78) and the 100 Fly (49.46).

“Nick had a lifetime best swim in the 200 Free and a terrific swim in the 500 (Free),” Kinel said. “Andrew’s IM time of 1:49 makes him the top seed at the State Meet. His Fly is amongst the top guys too.”

The other individual champ for the Trojans was Lucas Piunti in the 100 Back (51.02).

“Lucas going 51 in the Back gives him a tremendous seed,” Kinel said. “His 1:51 in the IM puts him fifth in that too. You can’t say enough about those swims.”

Chesterton also won the 400 Free Relay with the quartet of Alders, Declan Tharp, Wallar and Hanas in a pool record time of 3:06.72.

“That’s one of the top two or three times in the State,” Kinel said. “We have some awesome seeds going into next weekend. We need to put in a good week of practice and swim well Friday night to try and set ourselves up.”

The Trojans will also have a host of swimmers competing that made the State Cut times.

“Ethan Wing in the 50 and 100 Free swam great. He’s come so far in the last couple of years. He anchored our 200 Medley in 20.3,” Kinel said. “Gabe Kroeger had an awesome 200 IM. Danny Schmiegel in the IM and Back was awesome. His back was under the cut.”

All of which only adds the historic legacy of the Trojan program.

“We approach every season the same. We’re trying to get everybody to improve and put some science into the sport,” Kinel said. “I want them to realize the tradition and history behind it. I want them to know the names that came before them and I think that’s important for the program to continue the way it is.”
