The Chesterton boys
tennis team continued its quest for a fourth straight Sectional title took a
big step forward Wednesday with 3-2 opening round victory over Valparaiso.
“I told the guys
before the match that our schedule was tough this season for a reason,”
Chesterton coach Tom Bour said. “We prepared to have a match like we did
today. Valparaiso is a well-coached team and they played great.”
The Trojans first
point of the night came at No. 1 doubles as Blake Ellenwood and Chad Whelan
beat Will Behrend 6-1, 6-0. The duo is now 10-1 on the year.
“Our No. 1 doubles
team Ellenwood and Whelan really set the tone early with a decisive win,”
Bour said. “Their energy is hard to match and their attacking style of play
can just overwhelm opponents.”
Point two came from
Matt Jewison, who improved to 16-6 overall, at No. 1 singles with a 6-1, 6-2
victory over Evan Cecchini, while the deciding point came at No. 2 as Nick
Hanson beat Matt Wanek 6-0, 6-4.
“It was great to
see Nick Hanson at No. 2 play so well in such a big moment in his first
post-season experience,” Bour said. “In the end, it was his point that
clinched it for us.”
The Trojans will
play the host Indians at Portage for the Sectional title tonight at 4:15
