Trojan boys tennis team improves to 3-0 in DAC play

The Chesterton boys tennis team improved to 3-0 in Duneland Athletic Conference play with 4-1 victory over Portage on Tuesday.

In singles, Matt Jewison swept Zack Gertzen to get things started at No. 1 6-0, 6-0, while Corydon Gaff did the same thing at No. 3 with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Mickey Winicky.

In doubles, Blake Ellenwood and Chad Whelan had little trouble at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Evan Gerike and Alex Bourge. At No. 2, Paul Petro and Luke Liapes beat Ronnie Wilkins and Bryan Garrison 6-2, 6-0.

The Trojans return to the court on Thursday when they host Merrillville beginning at 4:15 p.m.

Singles -- 1. Matt Jewison (C) def. Zack Gertzen 6-0, 6-0; 2. Bryce Kissinger (P) def. Nick Hanson 7-5, 6-3; 3. Corydon Gaff (C) def. Mickey Winicky 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles -- 1. Blake Ellenwood/Chad Whelan (C) def. Evan Gerike/Alex Bourge 6-1, 6-0; 2. Paul Petro/Luke Liapes (C) def. Ronnie Wilkins/Bryan Garrison 6-2, 6-0.

Records: Chesterton 3-3 (3-0 DAC), Portage 4-3 (0-3 DAC).
