The Chesterton boys
tennis team finished third overall in the 8-team Crown Point Invitational on
No. 22 in the State, won the team title. Crown Point finished second.
At No. 1 singles,
Luke Liapes dropped his opening match, but responded with victories over
Logansport (8-4) and Valparaiso (8-4).
At No. 2 singles,
Fabio Haiduc opened the day with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Valparaiso before
falling 6-2, 7-6 to Zionsville. Drake Redman handled the third match of the
day in the flight and dropped a 0-6, 6-2, (10-5) to South Bend Adams.
At No. 3 singles,
Troy Feller won a grueling 6-3, 3-6, (10-7) win over South Bend Adams in his
opener before losing 6-3, 7-6 to Logansport in the second round. John Powell
subbed for Feller in the third place match, but fell 6-4, 6-3.
At No. 1 doubles,
Nick Hanson and Corydon Gaff beat Logansport in the opening round before
falling to Crown Point. In the third place match, the duo had little trouble
in getting a win over South Bend Adams.
At No. 2 doubles,
Drew Engels and James Navarro also finished third. The duo beat Angola and
lost to Zionsville. They beat Logansport 7-5, 6-1 in the day’s final match.
The Trojans return
to the court on Tuesday when they host Merrillville beginning at 4:30 p.m.
