Trojan boys soccer outlasts Lake Central

The Chesterton boys soccer team improved to 9-1 on the season and 4-0 in Duneland Athletic Conference play with a 2-1 victory over Lake Central on Wednesday night.

“A win is a win,” Chesterton coach Lucas Sabedra said. “At the end of the day, all you see is the final score.”

Zack Bowser opened the scoring for the Trojans with a penalty kick in the game’s second minute. The game would stay that way through halftime when LC scored to tie things at 1-1.

“We’re really good at building up out of the back and getting into the final third,” Sabedra said. “We’re working on executing and finishing goals now.”

Ryan O’Dell did just that with 5:12 remaining in the game as his left foot sent a ball past the Indians’ goalkeeper for the game-winner on a pass from Nick Biel.

“Ryan had a nice physical game,” Sabedra said. “He likes to match-up against a lot of those guys because they are all juniors. Nick did a really good job of attacking space and making people commit to him.”

Lake Central mounted a comeback attempt with three point-blank shots that were all turned away by Chesterton goalkeeper Charlie Eaton.

“Charlie is such a great goalie,” Sabedra said. “When we are playing sound in front of him, you don’t get to see what he can do a lot. Great goalies make great saves when the game is on the line and Charlie did that for us tonight.”

The Trojans return to play on Saturday when they travel to Bishop Noll for a 10 a.m. junior varsity start.
