The day has finally come.

The Chesterton boys soccer team will open up its 2020 season tonight when they travel to Boone Grove with a varsity only game beginning at 4:30 p.m.

“I’m really excited about this group,” Chesterton coach Lucas Sabedra said. “We’re really clicking well right now. All the guys coming up were on the varsity last year, but behind a really strong cast of seniors.”

The Trojans lost 12 seniors and eight starters from last year’s Sectional championship team that fell to Northridge in the Regional. The teams were scheduled to play last Saturday to open the season, but had to reschedule.

“That was definitely the inspiration over the summer, to play the team we lost to at Regionals,” Sabedra said. “Didn’t happen, and I think, we’re just taking things one day at a time. Taking every practice and every game like it could be our last.”

Chesterton’s trio of seniors Nick Biel, Zack Bowser and Charlie Eaton are among the best players in the State and will be relied on heavily.

“I think they are as good at their position as anybody in the State,” Sabedra said. “They have the respect in the Region for what they’ve done on the field over the last few years.”

Classmates Matt Lane and Kevin McCoy round out the senior class and will help a stingy Trojan defense.

“Even though we’ve been restricted, we’ve put a lot of good work in tactically and physically,” Sabedra said. “We’ll rely a lot on sophomores and juniors. I think the younger guys are excited for high school soccer. We’ve built a program that the kids are excited to be part of.”

Juniors that will handle duty include Ryan O’Dell, Liam Grimes and Benecio Alvarez. The sophomores will include Kaden Donnella, Matteo Guerrero, Josh Wadowski and Gage Torres.

“We have the same mindset we had a couple years ago,” Sabedra said. “Our older kids are showing the younger kids how to do things right. And the younger kids are paying attention.”
