Trojan Boys Soccer beats Merrillville 5-1

You can’t play your best game every night.

The No. 2 ranked Chesterton boys soccer team found that out Wednesday night, but came away with a 5-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Merrillville.

“We were very direct on a small field,” Chesterton coach Lucas Sabedra said. “We were constantly turning the ball over to their back line and keeper.”

Merrillville scored the game’s first goal, but the Trojans tied the game before half when Zack Bowser put a ball away past the Pirates’ goalkeeper.

The game would stay scoreless until Nathan Arthur took a cross from Robbie Murphy and put it in the lower corner for a 2-1 lead. Kaden Donella assisted Bowser on his second goal of the night for a 3-1 lead.

“We started playing like ourselves and played quicker in the second half,” Sabedra said. “We were less direct and quicker with our build-up through the midfield.”

Seth Conway scored the other two goals for the Trojans and had an assist, while Bowser and Robbie Capehart also dished out helpers.

Charlie Eaton recorded three saves in the victory.
