Trojan Boys Hoops blasts Crown Point 56-39

The first time they played, a 14-0 run to end the game was the story.

No such story this time.

The Chesterton boys basketball team picked up another Duneland Athletic Conference victory with a dominant third quarter en route to a 56-39 win at Crown Point on Friday night.

“In the second half, our energy level went straight up,” Chesterton coach Marc Urban said. “We have to create more possessions for us by rebounding the ball and not turning it over, we have a lot of offensive weapons.”

The Trojans led just 22-18 early in the third quarter when Austin Peterson and Tyler Nelson hit back-to-back triples to start a 18-2 run that put the game away.

Peterson hit four treys on the night on his way to a game-high 18 points and Nelson scored seven of his nine points in the stretch.

“In the first half, I thought the ball stuck in our hands,” Urban said. “In the second half, it got moving much better, side to side. We drove the right angles and made the right reads. That’s when good things happen for us.”

The lead grew to 44-23 after three quarters and never crept under 20 until the final two minutes of the game.

“I really didn’t say much at halftime,” Urban said. “We obviously didn’t play great in the first half and our seniors stepped up and got iftfixed.”

The Trojans built an early 12-7 lead as Peterson scored 10 points in the first period.

“He’s moving better and he has a really good energy,” Urban said of his senior forward. “The biggest thing is that it looks like he’s having a lot of fun out there. That’s good to see.”

The Trojans hit on 13-of-22 shots (59 percent) from the field in the second half and held CP to just 16-of-45 (35 percent) on the night.

Chesterton also outrebounded the Bulldogs 29-24.

“The first time we played them, their big kids beat up on our big kids,” Urban said. “We rebounded the ball much better and we have to continue to do that if we want to win games later in the year.”

Rounding out the scoring for the Trojans were Ky Palombizio (9 points), Jake Wadding (6 points), Jack Eaton (6 points), Noah Mahoney (2 points), Harley Lohmeyer (2 points), Kolton Cardenas (2 points) and Nick Mullen (2 points).

The Trojans return to the floor on Friday night when they travel to Lake Central. The JV game is set for a 5:30 p.m. tip.
