The Chesterton boys basketball team started fast, but East Chicago Central got faster.

The Trojans built an early 10-4 lead, but a 19-0 run pushed the visiting Cardinals to a 23-10 lead and they never looked back in picking up a 76-59 non-conference win Tuesday night.

“They played with a lot more purpose than we did,” Chesterton coach Tom Peller said. “We didn’t make shots that we’ve been making. We’d been playing up and down all year and tonight we just didn’t do it very well.”

After EC pushed its lead to 33-17, the Trojans rallied for a 13-5 run to end the half and close within 38-30. Jack Mullen started the run with a pair of 3-pointers and Ky Palombizio added one as well.

The Cardinals forced four consecutive turnovers to start the third quarter and turned them into an 8-0 run that pushed the lead back to 16 points.

“We got a little one-on-oneish and took quick shots,” Peller said. “It fed right into what they wanted to do. We just tried to do too much.”

Rhyss Lewis scored back-to-back baskets midway through the fourth quarter to pull the Trojans within 64-52, but they never got any closer. Lewis led Chesterton with 28 points.

“I thought our transition defense was horrible tonight and I take responsibility for that,” Peller said. “We have to get back and get set. We talked about it at halftime and we just didn’t do it.

“They had 20 or 30 points in transition.”

East Chicago hit on 27-of-51 shots (53 percent) from the field, while the Trojans hit on 21-of-59 shots (36 percent). CHS also was just 6-of-24 from 3-point range.

“It’s good that they exposed our weaknesses,” Peller said. “We learned a lot about our team tonight and where we need to get better. If we see them again, we’ll have to do something else.

“This was a good lesson for us.”
