The late fourth quarter charge couldn’t save them.

The Chesterton boys basketball team scored 29 fourth quarter points and battled, but couldn’t overcome early shooting woes and dropped a 71-65 Duneland Athletic Conference decision at LaPorte on Friday.

“I don’t feel like we played terrible,” Chesterton coach Marc Urban said. “It’s hard to win on the road. We have to figure out a way to get it done.”

The Trojans trailed 61-53 with 2:45 to play before Jack Eaton hit a 3-pointer and Jake Wadding hit a pair of free throws to cut the lead to 61-58.

A Slicer free throw pushed the lead to 62-58 before Wadding scored again with 50.6 seconds left to pull within 60-58. A steal of the inbounds pass turned into a missed layup that could have tied the game.

“We had some opportunities and didn’t take advantage of them,” Urban said.

LaPorte hit 7-of-8 from the foul line in the final 19.1 seconds to put the game away.

“They made plays when they needed to,” Urban said. “Give them credit.”

Chesterton made just 5-of-19 shots (26 percent) in the first half and were 20-of-46 (44 percent) from the field on the night. They were 7-of-22 from 3-point range.

“We had some good looks and just didn’t make any of them,” Urban said.

Wadding led the Trojans with 27 points, while Jack Eaton tallied 16 points. Tyler Nelson finished with 11 points.

“Jake is going to get to the rim, but we got to the point where we had to force him to score because we couldn’t make anything,” Urban said.

LaPorte finished the night 24-of-43 (56 percent) from the field and outrebounded Chesterton 31-21.

“They hit some tough shots,” Urban said. “They got free and hit some big ones.”

Chesterton returns to the court on Wednesday with a tripleheader at Andrean. The freshman game is set to start at 4:30 p.m.
