Trojan baseball team routs LaPorte

Back To Front Page

Tyler Nelson made his first start of the year on the mound Wednesday. It probably won’t be his last.

Nelson struck out 10 in four innings and allowed just two hits as the Chesterton baseball team routed LaPorte 11-1 in Duneland Athletic Conference play.

The Trojans gave Nelson all the support he would need in the second as Zach McKenna started a rally with a bunt single. Garrett Fairbanks’ bunt was misplayed and McKenna came all the way around to score.

Kolton Cardenas put runners on the corners with a single. After moving to second, Cardenas and Fairbanks scored on Max Weller’s single to right. Weller later scored on a balk for a 4-0 CHS lead.

The lead grew in the third with a two-out, six-run Trojan rally as Nelson and McKenna started the inning with back-to-back singles. After a caught stealing, Fairbanks was hit by a pitch.

Jake Roof singled to score McKenna and Connor Krantz walked to load the bases. Weller singled to score Fairbanks and Jeremy Krantz’s single scored Roof and Connor Krantz.

Zach Westphal singled to score Weller and Nelson walked to load the bases. McKenna plated Jeremy Krantz when his ground ball resulted in an error to make the score 10-0.

Chesterton’s final run came in the fifth when Fairbanks scored Westphal on an RBI ground out.

Offensively, Jeremy Krantz, Westphal, McKenna, Cardenas, Roof and Weller all collected two hits. Nelson added a single in the 13-hit barrage.

Connor Krantz struck out two in one inning of work in relief of Nelson.

The Trojans return to the field tonight when they travel to Michigan City for a 4:30 p.m. first pitch.
