Jake Post didn’t need much help on Wednesday night, but the Chesterton
offense helped anyway.
Post struck out seven and didn’t allow a hit through four innings as the
Trojans improved to 2-0 on the year with a 9-1 victory over East Chicago
“We always try to split (pitching) up and have two guys throw (each game)
early in the year,” Chesterton coach Jack Campbell said. “Then as the season
goes on, we extend them until they get to the point where they go until they
can’t go anymore. Even though they didn’t have any hits, my concern is the
next outing. I don’t want to overextend him (Post) early on.”
Post got all the offensive output he would need when the Trojans’ scored a
solo run in the first inning on an RBI single by Austin Cooley. Cooley
finished the game 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and three RBI’s.
“We hit the ball well again tonight,” Campbell said. “Obviously the pitching
isn’t great, but I’ve had teams that turned this type of pitching into a 3-2
game too. Confidence is a very important thing. Hitting is contagious.
“One guy hits a ball hard and everybody thinks the kid is hittable and they
Chesterton exploded in the second inning as Post doubled to centerfield to
start the frame. Zach Hise reached on a fielder’s choice that also resulted
in an EC Central error that scored Post.
Scott Homner reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a single by Justin
Jenks. KJ Zelenika’s RBI single and a fielder’s choice off the bat of Jordan
Peterson pushed the lead to 4-0.
Cooley’s RBI double put him on second base just ahead of an RBI single by
Zach Rochowiak. Rochowiak finished the night 3-for-3.
“Rochowiak had a nice game at the plate with three hits,” Campbell said.
“It’s pretty impressive considering he missed all year last year with an
injury. We tried him in a lot of places and finally just put him in right
field to keep that bat in the lineup.”
Chesterton’s final three runs came in the fourth inning when Peterson drew a
one-out walk. Cooley’s second double and a single by Rochowiak pushed the
score to 8-0. Post’s run-scoring single plated Rochowiak with the Trojans’
“We got to play everybody again and get a win,” Campbell said. “We’ve got a
tough rest of the week.”
Alex Olson pitched two innings in relief and Justin Jenks pitched the final
