With the Duneland
Athletic Conference title on the line, both teams brought their ‘A’ game.
Lake Central scored
a run in the top of the seventh inning and made it hold up to beat
Chesterton 4-3 on Wednesday night and win the outright DAC title.
The Trojans took an
early lead with a solo run in the second inning as Logan Lawson lined a
two-out double and scored on Chris Torres’ RBI single.
Indians took advantage of a walk and a pair of wild pitches from Chesterton
starter Grant Brunt to get on the board themselves in the third with three
that way until the sixth when Brett Roeske drew a leadoff walk. Torres
blasted a line drive over the left field fence to score himself and
courtesty runner Patrick Sosby to tie the score at 3-3.
In the top of the
seventh, Trojan reliever Stephen Gilbertsen got back-to-back strikeouts to
start the frame before a double started a rally. After a hit batsmen put
runners on first and second, Gilbertsen appeared to strike out the next
batter on a check swing, but it was called a ball and eventually he earned a
walk to load the bases.
Jack Campbell headed to the mound to talk to his pitcher and was tossed from
the game after confronting the umpire when he came out to break-up the
Gilbertsen hit the
next batter to score the eventual game-winning run from third.
attempted a comeback in the bottom of the seventh as Tyler Nelson singled
with two outs, but was thrown out trying to steal second.
Torres (3 RBI’s)
and Lawson led the offense with a pair of hits and Gilbertsen took the loss
after allowing just one run on two hits over four innings of work and
striking out seven.
Brunt, the starter,
threw three innings and struck out four.
