Trojan Baseball clinches share of DAC title

Back To Front Page

The Chesterton baseball team had to work overtime, but clinched a share of the Duneland Athletic Conference regular season title with a 6-4 victory in eight innings at Merrillville on Tuesday.

The Trojans opened the scoring in the top of the second as Tyler Sufana tripled and scored on Corey Rusboldt’s RBI double.

Merrillville answered in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run off.

Chesterton responded immediately in the fourth as Mike Crowley singled with one out. Sufana drew a walk and Mitch Kobitz doubled with two outs to plate both runners.

The Pirates scored one run in the fifth to force extra innings, but the Trojans got the bats going again in the eighth.

Austin VanderZanden reached on a one-out error and Crowley drew a walk just ahead of a three-run home run by Sufana to center field.

Merrillville scored one run in the bottom of the inning, but it was too little, too late.

Chesterton will host Lake Central on Thursday with a chance to clinch an outright regular season DAC title. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
