Back To Front Page

The Chesterton baseball team pounded out 11 hits and cruised to an 11-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory over Michigan City on Friday.

Neither team scored until the bottom of the third when the Trojans cracked the scoreboard for two runs.

Andrew Ralph led of the frame with a single. After back-to-back outs, Austin VanderZanden ripped a double to right field that plated Ralph. VanderZanden scored on a single by Mike Crowley for the 2-0 lead.

The Chesterton offense exploded in the fourth inning to the tune of six runs.

Mitch Kobitz and Corey Rusboldt led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Pinch-runner Jeremy Jaeger scored as Michael Griffin reached on an error and Ralph loaded the bases with an infield single.

After a fielder’s choice, Aery Pratt drew a walk to score Griffin and VanderZanden’s sacrifice fly plated Ralph. Crowley’s three-run home run to left field cleared the bases and staked the Trojans to an 8-0 lead.

Michigan City clawed out its only run in the fifth, but CHS answered with one of its own in the bottom of the frame. Kobitz scored when Jordan Morandini reached on an error.

The final two tallies of the night came in the bottom of the sixth as Crowley got a one-out single to start the rally. Tyler Sufana’s double to center field allowed Kobitz’s sacrifice fly to score Crowley. Rusboldt’s single scored Sufana to set the final margin.

Crowley and Rusboldt led the offensive attack for Chesterton with three hits each, while Ralph tallied two hits in the victory. Crowley also had four RBI’s.

Pratt worked the first 4 1/3 innings on the mound to garner the win after allowing just three hits and striking out three. Dallas Milligan worked the final 1 2/3 innings and struck out one.
