baseball team scored early and rolled to a 13-3 Duneland Athletic Conference
victory over Merrillville on Monday.
The Trojans got the
offense going right away in the first as Chris Boren singled with one out
and Anthony Kurek doubled to score him.
Following a ground
out, Brett Roeske and Eric Ralph walked to load the bases. Grant Brunt’s
ground ball was misplayed, allowing Roeske and Ralph to score for a 4-0
a pair of runs in the top of the second and Chesterton immediately answered
with two of its own.
Owen Hallas started
the rally with one out and Boren followed with a line drive to right field.
Kurek’s RBI single plated Hallas.
Boren scored on a
misplayed ball off the bat of Austin Peterson.
In the fourth,
Peterson walked with one out and Roeske singled. Ralph singled to left to
score pinch runner Tommy Benson. Brunt’s RBI single scored courtesy runner
ground out plated Ralph to push the lead to 9-2.
The Pirates scored
a solo run in the fifth before the Trojans scored four in the sixth to
finish the game.
Torres walked to
start the inning before a pair of fly outs. Ethan Conway singled to right
that was followed with an error that allowed Torres to score.
walked to put runners on the corners. Sosby and Conway then scored on
Boren’s two-run double. Brayden Cortwright’s double ended the game as Boren
had four hits to lead the Trojans, while Hallas, Kurek, Roeske and Conway
each had two hits.
Brunt got the win
on the mound after working five innings and striking out seven. Stephen
Gilbertsen worked the final inning and struck out one.
