Expectations can be managed, but they are constantly changing.

Chesterton wrestling coach Chris Joll understands that as well as anyone after advancing eight wrestlers to next Saturday’s IHSAA Semistate at Merrillville.

“I don’t think we’ve gotten eight before. I think the most we’ve had is five,” Joll said after Saturday’s IHSAA Regional at Crown Point. “I’m looking at today and the places we got. I still didn’t think we finished as high as we could have. We have some pretty good individuals and some really talented kids that have wrestled a lot.

“They’ve worked really hard in the room.”

The Trojans picked up two Regional titles beginning with Jack Tolin taking top honors in the 120 pound class with a 6-3 win over Crown Point’s Austin Torres in the finals.

“I just like watching Jack wrestle,” Joll said. “He wrestles hard and he beat some guys that were difficult to move around.”

Andrew Davison’s victory at 182 pounds was the other Trojan title after a pin of Hanover Central’s Ashton Mutuwa (1:03).

“Andrew didn’t get the attention he’ll get from us in the next couple of weeks,” Joll said. “He does a nice job. He’s wrestled in those situations before. He just beats people up.”

The Trojans also got a runner-up performance from Diego Lemley at 138 pounds.

“Diego hasn’t been healthy and we were not going to wrestle the final, but he wanted to,” Joll said. “For a freshman to be in there with a senior is pretty good. He’s got to where we expected him to be.”

Dontae Rodriguez advanced to next week’s Semistate with a third place finish at 145 pounds.

“He pinned a kid in the Finals last week at Sectionals and the kid tried to adjust and Dontae out-toughed him,” Joll said. “He’s a hard worker and just a tough kid. He came in and learned each year and didn’t know how good he was. He’s a hard-working athlete that battled through a tough early season.

“Really proud of Dontae.”

Fourth place finishers for the Trojans included Luke Zelenika (152), Jack Davison (170), Davielle Stewart (195) and Dan Cutter (220).

“They all have their work cut out for them,” Joll said. “They all could face guys that may win the Semistate. You have to be good to get there. I know we’ll show up and give it our best shot.”

Crown Point won the team title with 179 points, while Valparaiso was second (146). Lowell finished third (114.5) and the Trojans were fourth (98). LaPorte rounded out the top five (37).
