That is why they’re called Trojans.
The Chesterton girls tennis team conquered the Merrillville Pirates 4-1,
bringing home another win, and the DAC Championship for the second year in a
“We are really happy about winning the DAC title for the second year in a
row,” coach Gretchen Shinn said. “Because of the Michigan City-Valparaiso
match, we might have to share it. The team is 6-0. Michigan City, has one
loss. We are assured a piece of the title which is good.”
Chesterton shut out the Pirates in quick fashion in singles as Bobbi Modesto
(No. 1) and Margaret Shinn (No. 2), took control of the courts early in the
match, beating their opponents with two 6-0 set scores.
At No. 3 singles, J.J Lee also took home top honors against Merrillville’s
Melanie Stubbs 6-0, 6-2.
“The girls did great tonight and met one of our goals,” Shinn said. “But we
still have to go through two tough matches, Portage and Valpo, to get out of
our Sectional. We beat both of them 3-2 earlier, so we really need to do it
again. It is hard to beat good teams twice.”
In Doubles, the No. 2 tandem of Brittny Stephan and Amanda Susnak had some
trouble with their sets, but slowly pulled out two 6-3 scores over opponents
Lauren Carniello and Miranda Vega.
“We do play against Munster tomorrow,” Shinn added. “They are not as strong
as last year, but our singles will be very competitive with them and our
doubles may have to step up.”
That sets the stage for Thursday’s matchup at home against Michigan City.
The outright DAC title will be on the line for the Trojans.
“Michigan City is pretty deep,” Shinn concluded. “Doubles are strong, but I
think we can compete with them. I’m hoping to sweep them in singles though.
“It’s going to come down to the wire.”
