The best team won.

Crown Point won nine events and set seven meet records, but the Chesterton girls swim team won its 15th straight Duneland Athletic Conference Meet title on Saturday at LaPorte.

The Trojans edged the Bulldogs 499-496 with Lake Central finishing a distant third (351 points).

“Everyone counted us out all year,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “We just kept chipping away at it. The girls were just wonderful today and they’ve been wonderful all year.

“I can’t say enough about them. They really stepped up today.”

Vanessa Krause was the lone individual winner for the Trojans with victories in the 50 Free (23.17) and the 100 Fly (53.88). Both times are DAC records.

“Two conference records and she was so tough on relays today too,” Kinel said. “Vanessa’s only a sophomore, but she’s such a leader. What a wonderful day and we expect it to continue through the post-season.”

The Trojans finished second in all three relays on the day and put three swimmers in the top five of six events.

“We felt like it was going to be this kind of a meet,” Kinel said. “Some things went our way on the front end and then Crown Point came storming back in the second half. We’re just fortunate to pull this out against a really great team.”

Kinel pointed to several swims during the day as keys, but could have talked all day on the subject.

“I hate trying to remember great swims because I always forget someone, but Caylee Casbon’s backstroke was huge,” Kinel said. “Our 200 line with Kelly (Craig) at 1:53, Amy (Socha) at 1:55 and Trenee (Fancher-Keller) going 1:56 set the standard right away. Stephanie Krause, a senior captain, with a great swim in the IM was just wonderful.

“Brittany (Borzych) dropped four seconds in the breaststroke because we had to have it. Up and down the line, we just had tremendous swims. And don’t forget about our divers. They had a tremendous day.”

And that’s the depth the Trojans needed to continue the streak.

“Crown Point is so good,” Kinel said. “Their top end kids are as good as anybody in the State. You need quality at this meet, but you need depth too. I told the kids that we are a swimming family and let’s get after it. It was fun to have great kids on both sides competing at their best.

“It’s almost a shame that somebody had to win, but I’m glad it was us.”
