Softball falls 2-1 in Regional Final

Back To Front Page

One mistake. One hit.

The Chesterton softball team did one, but couldn’t do the other in dropping a 2-1 decision in the IHSAA Regional Finals at Lake Central on Tuesday night.

“Those kids in there would take away half the wins we had this year to get this one today,” Chesterton coach LouAnn Hopson said. “That’s the type of kids they are. They wanted this one.”

Neither team mustered any offense in the first two innings, but Cassidy Grimm’s single to left to lead off the third got things started.

After a strikeout, Grimm stole second to get into scoring position, but the Trojans popped out and struck out to end the threat.

“We had a lot of opportunities and just didn’t get it done,” Hopson said.

Lake Central got on the board in the bottom of the inning, started by a leadoff single. A ground ball back to Trojan pitcher Lexi Benko was fielded clean, but her throw to second went off the glove of Maddie Snemis and into center field and put runners on the corners.

A ground ball to Kristi Stevenson sent the runner from third to the plate just ahead of the throw for a 1-0 LC lead. A ground out to Stevenson made it 2-0.

“We made a mistake in the field that cost us and we made some at the plate that cost us,” Hopson said. “In games at this level, you can’t have those. Every other time they pressured us, we came up with the play.”

The Trojans immediately rallied in the fourth as Snemis singled and Stevenson walked. An infield hit by Benko loaded the bases with no outs.

Back-to-back pop ups were followed by an RBI single to left by Cassidy Grimm to cut the lead to 2-1.

“(LC pitcher Alexa) Pinarski came up with some big pitches against us when she had to,” Hopson said.

Chesterton would get a runner to third in the fifth and second in the sixth, but couldn’t come up with the big hit to tie the game.

“There are a lot of wins in that group of seniors,” Hopson said. “A lot of bats in that group too. They’ve been playing together for a long time.”

Benko worked all six innings in the circle for the Trojans, allowing two unearned runs and just four hits. She struck out two in taking the loss.

“Lexi had a great game tonight,” Hopson said.
