Six Trojans advance to Wrestling Semistate

Back To Front Page

There was no dramatic championship victory for Jaycee Jensen this time.

Meeting LaPorte's Mike Eldridge in the 182-pound finals of Saturday's Crown Point Regional, the Chesterton senior wasn't able to repeat the magic of a week earlier, as Eldridge pinned Jensen at 3:23.

"We were right where we wanted to be," Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. "Jaycee let it all loose and he paid for it. He didn't make a wise choice. He tried a leg cradle or a split and he fell off the top."

In stark contrast to the wild 15-13 match in the sectional, the first two minutes were scoreless and Jensen wasn't able to get off his back.

"A lot of the problem last (time) was I didn't keep control," Eldridge said. "The whole match was kind of out of control. Credit him. He straight up wrestled better. I just had to slow down, be overall smarter. Those (high-scoring) matches are entertaining, but you leave it up to chance when you wrestle like that. It's all just who ends up on top."

Alex Katsafaros also lost in a sectional final rematch, 3-2 to New Prairie's Wade Young at 170. Young scored the only takedown of the match in the final seconds of the second period. A stalling point drew Katsafaros within one in the third period but Young hung on for another narrow victory.

"Alex had the same problems he had last weekend with the guy," Joll said. "(Young) still didn't do a whole lot. Alex doesn't really get that emotional. I think he was more upset because a lot of people put in a lot of time with him and he felt like he was letting them down. Hopefully, we get one more chance."

Sawyer Hallas (160) and Connor Smith (220) earned thirds for the Trojans. Hallas prevailed against a familiar foe at 160, edging Crown Point's Dax Jones for the third time, 4-3.

"Dax got the early takedown, but I saw the look on Sawyer's face and it was, yeah, I'm not going to lose this match," Joll said. "That's the first time he's been taken down like that and came back to win. Usually, they're better than us and we're done. He got after him and did a nice job putting him away. Sawyer's no slouch. He's gotten better as the year's gone on. His technique's better."

Smith pinned Valparaiso's Alex Kukurugya at 1:48 of the 220 third-place match, rebounding from a 6-4 overtime loss to Kankakee Valley's Alex Berdine in the semifinals.

"Connor wasn't feeling very good. We were very careful with him," Joll said. "He had a nice win over (Andrean's Adam Kopil), then wrestled Berdine really well. Against Kukurugya, that was just a senior deciding he was going to get the next spot. That was an important win."

Chesterton's other qualifiers for Saturday's Merrillville Semistate were Jack Tolin (fourth, 106) and Mike Double (fourth, 132). Tolin did well to make it out at all, needing overtime to survive his opener with Hebron's Gio Phan. He then lost 2-0 to C.P.'s Jonathan Moran, whom he had beaten twice previously, and 2-1 to Hanover Central's Issac Cortez.

"Jack had a bad day. He had a bad week of practice," Joll said. "It's been a long season. It's like a guy coming from Japan to the U.S. to play baseball. No matter how seasoned you are, it wears on you after a while. (The Moran match) was controversial. It could've went the other way, but we needed to win matches, not lose matches. He'll get better from this."

Double lost 6-0 to Lowell's Jake Gross in the semis and 1-0 to Hanover's Kyle Brewster for third. Gross went on to hand C.P.'s Zach Donaldson his first loss.

"We've talked about Mike struggling with his offense," Joll said. "Coach (Nick) Petrov really had those Hanover guys rolling. (Brewster)'s a well-disciplined wrestler. We tried some stuff on him and it just didn't work."

Josh Jensen (113), Eric Kramer (126), DaQwon Stewart (138), Luke Zelenika (152) and Dan Cutter (192) all exited in the first round for Chesterton.

"Luke had a nice match. He about beat (Lowell's Alexander) Mavros. That was good for a guy in his second year," Joll said. "We still need to get stronger at '13 and '26. (Stewart) wasn't afraid to go out there and bang with a really good guy."

Chesterton finished fifth in the team standings with 71 points, one behind Valpo. The top four teams -- C.P. (195), Lowell (123.5), Hanover (93.5) and Valpo (72) -- were all from the Crown Point Sectional.

"We didn't do too bad," Joll said. "We got through about who we planned to get through. We thought Jack would place a little higher and we'd get maybe three, four in the finals, being optimistic. When you get to this level, our program still lacks a little depth. You see it there with Crown Point. We lost some tough ones. Now you're at a time where you have to win because you're better than the other guy."
