Seniors lead CHS Wrestlers to win over LaPorte

A year removed from a disappointing senior night loss, this quartet of Chesterton seniors wasn’t going to let it happen again.

Hunter Rucklos, Chris Katsafaros, Joe Ponda and Ryley Harlow all recorded pins to lift the Trojan Wrestling team to a 46-28 Duneland Athletic Conference victory on Wednesday night.

“Four seniors, four falls,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “They all came at times when we needed it. That’s the culmination of their careers. I didn’t talk to any of them before their matches, they just get it.

“That makes me proud.”

Tommy St. Germain started the night for CHS with a 15-6 victory at 160.

After back-to-back pins by the Slicers, Ponda stuck Alex Toth in 3:15. Another LaPorte pin was followed by Harlow’s first period fall over Landon Blackburn (1:58).

After Kaitlin Loehmer won at 106 over Shamus Troy (10-6), a decision victory by LaPorte was answered by three successive wins for the Trojans.

Matt Estill (120), Mike Double (126) and Jack Davison (132) all got wins before Rucklos (145) and Katsafaros (152) finished the meet with pins.

“We gave up some falls that we shouldn’t have,” Joll said. “On paper, we’d have really had to screw up to lose this match. I’m glad that the seniors got to come out and leave this place on a win.”
