More solid pitching lifted the Chesterton baseball team to a pair of victories over the weekend.

On Friday, the Trojans used a four-run sixth inning to pick up a 4-1 Duneland Athletic Conference victory at Portage. On Saturday, CHS used a three-hit shutout from Bobby Humphreys for a 3-0 victory over Griffith at RailCats Stadium.

Portage opened the scoring Friday with a single run in the second inning before the Trojans exploded offensively in the sixth.

Humphreys doubles to lead off the frame and advanced to third when Andrew Ralph reached on an error. Zach Jenks reached on a fielders choice and the bases loaded when Jake Post was hit by a pitch.

After a force out at home, JR Frederick made the score 2-1 with a sacrifice fly. Nate Crownover’s double pushed the lead to 4-1.

Mitch Kobitz came on in relief of Post for the final two frames and allowed a hit in each inning, but no runners got into scoring position as he picked up his first save of the season.

Post got the win by working five innings, allowing two hits and striking out seven.

Against Griffith, the Trojans got on the board first in the second inning when Brandon Jenks tripled to lead things off. Crownover’s sacrifice fly made the score 1-0.

In the third, Ralph doubled with two outs and scored on Zach Jenks’ single.

The final run came in the fifth innings when Ralph again came up with a two-out double. Ralph moved to third on a passed ball and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

That was more than enough for Humphreys, who struck out 13 and allowed only three hits in getting the complete-game victory.

Chesterton returns to the field on Tuesday when they play host to Lake Central beginning at 4:30 p.m.
