Personal records abound for Trojans at Girls State Finals

Back To Front Page

Just before she ran the 3,200 in her first state meet appearance, Chesterton freshman Bailey Ranta said she got some words of wisdom from coach Lindsay Moskalick to help calm her nerves.

“I was really nervous,” Ranta said. “But my coach told me that all I had to do was run my best and that there wasn’t anything else I could do.”

Ranta entered the state meet as the No. 22 seed but came away with a tenth-place finish at a time of 11 minutes, 2.98 seconds -- the lone individual competitor for Chesterton at this year’s state meet.

“I set a new (personal record) by 24 seconds,” Ranta said. “I’m really proud. I wish I could’ve gotten ninth, but I’m still a freshman so I still have time to improve.”

A ninth-place finish would’ve meant all-state honors and a medal for Ranta but her coach also believes that podium finish can be obtained in the future.

“She’s got a bright future ahead,” Moskalick said of Ranta. “She ran a gutsy run, putting herself up with the top group at the beginning. She did a fantastic job.”

Ranta was the lone individual representing Chesterton on Saturday, but two relay teams also ran at state, keeping with the theme of Trojans outperforming their pre-race rankings.

Chesterton’s 3,200 relay was seeded 20th and ended up 15th with a season-best time of 9:37.90 thanks to the quartet of senior Kara Krol, junior Ashley Craycraft and sophomores Frances Clancy and Nalani Malackowski.

“It was exciting for us because we didn’t know what we could do here,” Malackowski said. “We tried our best and got a new PR.”

The incredible number of athletes also helped spur the relay team to a faster time.

“There’s a lot more competition here,” Clancy said. “That and the adrenaline.”

This relay team was assembled just before the postseason began after a season-long tinkering with the athletes and the order of runners. But it clicked with this group in the final month, resulting in a state meet appearance.

“Once we found the specific order and everyone liked the legs they were running and knew what they had to do,” the IUPUI-bound Krol said, “that really helped bring it all together.”

And as the first running event on a steamy June evening, Moskalick said the temperature was close to 90 degrees down on the track when they started.

“They dropped nine more seconds off their best time in heat that we haven’t run in all season,” Moskalick said.

It was much cooler by the time the 1,600 relay took to the track but those Trojans also ran their best times of the season. The foursome of Craycraft, senior Haley Moore and freshmen Camryn Dunn and Bree Gentry were seeded 19th overall but first in their heat. And they won that heat with a time of 4:00.04, good for 12th overall.

“We told them that they were the top seed in the first heat, and let’s keep it that way,” Moskalick said.

Both Moore and Dunn talked about the moments leading up to the start of the race.

“It’s kind of nerve-wracking,” Moore said. “You’re getting ready at the tent with all these other people who are so fast and so good, and you feel like you’re not good enough. But we were here for a reason and it feels like we proved ourselves.”

“The build-up of the week has been so surreal,” Dunn said. “And then you’re putting on your spikes and realizing that this is about to happen: you’re about to run at state.”

But the big stage didn’t faze them or any of the Chesterton athletes on Saturday.

“Coming in, each individual and each relay set a goal and they improved upon it,” Moskalick said. “They all represented Chesterton proudly."
