The Portage Indians lived up to the No. 1 ranking.

The visiting Indians won the first nine matches en route to a 47-21 victory over No. 8 Chesterton Thursday night at CHS.

“They were missing two of their better guys in the lineup tonight, so it’s clear why they are No. 1 in the State,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said.

After starting the match with a forfeit victory at 285, Portage got four decisions, three pins and a tech fall as they built a 44-0 lead.

“We had young guys out there and hopefully they look at tonight as an opportunity,” Joll said. “At the smaller weights, there was a disparity in ability. We’ll go back to the room, keep working and try to get better.”

The Trojans broke the string at 160 pounds when Diego Lemley pinned Drake Guerrero in the second period.

“It was only Diego’s second match of the season and his best pinning combinations are from his feet,” Joll said. “He gets people so flustered and the kid he beat is good.”

Ismael Cornejo won the final match for the Indians at 171 with a 10-3 victory over Cade Girgenti.

“Cade came out on the short end, but has improved a great deal in the room since the year started,” Joll said.

Lucas Davison won by decision at 182, while Andrew Davison stuck Joey Kliza in 2:52 at 195 pounds.

“Lucas got a little frustrated wrestling against a kid that’s more of a brawler,” Joll said. “He did the best he could and needs to remember he’s a lot better than those guys and just pin them. Andrew did exactly what Andrew does. He went out took him down, turned him a couple of times and pinned him.”

Eli Pokorney won the final match of the night with a pin in just 57 seconds against Chester Swopes at 220 pounds.

“I think we are still waiting to see just how good Eli is,” Joll said. “He just keeps taking kids down, getting on top of them and pinning them. He’s wrestling athletic guys and executing a really good plan.”

Chesterton returns to the mat Wednesday when they travel to Crown Point to take on the Bulldogs beginning at 6:30 p.m.
