Momentum is tough to get in a sporting event, but you know when you have it.

The No. 3 Chesterton girls swim team broke open a 55-55 tie with five events to go en route to a 111-75 victory over No. 2 Northridge on Saturday afternoon.

“We talk about this being a team sport and how everybody has to contribute. Every single swim matters and when you get into a meet like this, everyone realizes it’s really true,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “It was so much fun today with a lot of great races that came right down to the final touch. The people who came today got their money’s worth and we knew that’s how it would be.”

With the meet tied, Chesterton’s Lauryn Kallay and Amy Socha went 1-2 in the 500 Free to take a 67-59 lead and the Trojans never looked back.

“We were were able to stay with them in the Fly and 100 Free before Lauryn and Amy in the 500 got us going again,” Kinel said.

The Trojans quartet of Andrea Hanas, Cara Kroeger, Abi Raines and Kallay won the 200 Free Relay (1:40.26) and Kroeger won the 100 Back in 58.86. Caylee Casbon finished third in 59.87.

“Momentum carried into the Free Relays and Cara winning the backstroke and our breaststrokers doing what they always do was just great,” Kinel said.

Chesterton put the meet on ice in the 100 Breaststroke with a 1-2-3 finish from Jenn Gillen (1:06.89), Aubrey Wing (1:08.64) and Cameron Kleczka (1:09.01).

“We really came home the last few events,” Kinel said. “They touched us out in the Medley Relay to start the day and we knew that was possible. The kids didn’t let that get to us. We knew we had an advantage in depth.”

The Trojans set the final score with a victory in the 400 Free Relay from the quartet of Kallay, Jaclyn Klimczak, Hanas and Socha (3:36.89).

The other individual victory for the Trojans came from Kallay in the 200 Free (1:54.15).

“What turned the meet around for us was Lauryn’s win in the 200 Free and then we held our own in the IM,” Kinel said. “It seemed like if they won the event, we were able to still finish well enough to outscore them.”

Chesterton returns to the pool on Tuesday when they host Crown Point beginning at 5:30 p.m.
