The Chesterton boys swim team lived up to its No. 2 ranking with a dominating 118-65 victory over No. 4 Northridge in their season opener on Saturday.

“We were lights out right from the start,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “Preseason is so long and the kids were just ready to race. I’m so glad to have this meet on the schedule. Northridge is always so good and they make you get ready early.”

The Trojans took control right from the first event with a win in the 200 Medley Relay from Danny Schmiegel, Gary Kostbade, Andrew Alders and Sam Kravitz (1:38.38). Justin Wallar followed the with a big win in the 200 Free (1:46.30).

“We set the tone early in the medley relay and then Jack (Wallar) going crazy in the 200 Free,” Kinel said. “He went our really fast and was just able to hang on.”

The Trojans also got individual victories from Kravitz in the 50 Free (22.53), Logan Bell in 1-Meter Diving (152.65), Alders in the 100 Fly (54.61), Nick Hanas in the 500 Free (4:45.07) and Kostbade in the 100 Breaststroke (58.36).

“There were big swims up and down the line from us,” Kinel said. “Nick in the 500 was unbelievable. Gary (Kostbade) did his thing in the breaststroke and Andrew Gillen breaking one minute in the breaststroke is really good. Andrew (Alders) winning the Fly as a freshman in a big meet was huge.”

The Trojans really put the finishing touches on the meet with victories in the 200 Free Relay from the quartet of Kravitz, Wes Slaughter, Declan Tharp and Hanas (1:29.45) and the 400 Free Relay from Slaughter, Alders, Hanas and Kostbade (3:15.62).

“I was really happy with our relays,” Kinel said. “I don’t know if that’ll be our final groups, but it was a really nice start to the year.”

Chesterton returns to the pool on Tuesday when they host Crown Point beginning at 5:30 p.m.
