The quick attack worked again.

The No. 2 ranked Chesterton boys soccer team scored just 2:29 into the game and beat No. 7 Lake Central 2-1 in a pivotal Duneland Athletic Conference match on Wednesday.

“We put a lot of emphasis on the fast start,” Chesterton coach Lucas Sabedra said. “It opens up the field for us and allows us to play our game.”

Zack Bowser did it again as he drew a penalty in the box and connected on a penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.

“Zack and the forwards have a pretty good mindset to go to goal,” Sabedra said. “They’re hyped up from the get-go. That’s his killer instinct.

“If he didn’t get clobbered in the box, he was one-on-one with the goalie and I’d take those chances all the time.”

The lead grew to 2-0 with just over 16:00 left in the first half when Bowser took a short corner kick, beat a defender and found Joey Stark on the back post.

“It’s easy to mess up your mentality when you are ahead in a tough game,” Sabedra said. “You kind of go into a defensive shell and I thought we did that in the second half.”

Lake Central scored its only goal of the night with :59.6 left in the half on a penalty kick by Rob MacNeill. It’s the first goal the Trojans have given up at home this season.

Charlie Eaton recorded five saves in the victory.

“Charlie is a freak athlete,” Sabedra said. “He’s been great. Charlie’s only a sophomore, but he’s so vocal back there. He’s wise beyond his years.”

The Trojans moved one step closer to their first DAC title since 2015.

“Our first goal is to win the DAC and this was a game we knew from the beginning of the season was going to be our No. 1 challenge,” Sabedra said. “We were focused on this game and now we have to look forward to the rest of our DAC games.

“We have to keep our ego in check and not take anyone lightly.”

Chesterton returns to the field on Saturday when they head south to play Lafayette Harrison. The JV game is set for 10 a.m.
