No. 1 Munster too much for Chesterton Boys

The Munster boys swim team is ranked No. 1 and they lived up to it Thursday night with a 119-67 victory over No. 3 Chesterton.

“ I think it was the type of meet that it normally is,” Chesterton coach Kevin Kinel said. “The score was tighter than it looks because there were so many close races. We’re just a couple of people short of really being able to compete with them in a dual meet.”

Munster jumped on top fast with victories in the 200 Medley Relay and the 200 Free before Chesterton’s Kyle Whitaker won the 200 IM (1:52.26).

“ Tip your hat to Munster,” Kinel said. “They are terrific. They showed why they are the top-ranked team. And this is a tough meet for us because our bigger focus has to be on the Conference Meet on Saturday.

“You want to do well, but Saturday is more important.”

After Munster’s Kevin Behrens won the 50 Free, the SeaHorses held a 16-point lead. The Trojan diving duo of Jake Brehmer and Alex Olson went 1-2 to cut that lead to 10.

“ Our divers did a really nice job tonight,” Kinel said. “We needed them today and they really came through for us in a tough environment.”

Munster answered with victories in the next four events, including the 200 Free Relay, before Whitaker won the 100 Back (55.84).

“ In this type of meet, you find some errors,” Kinel said. “We did some things wrong on turns and relay exchanges that you don’t really see against lesser competition. Tonight, they’re glaring.”

The Trojans only won three events, but weren’t short on good performances.

“Both of Tyler’s (Fozkos) swims were great,” Kinel said. “Taylor Zakhar had two good swims. Nate Schuster in the Fly. Nick Borzych in the IM and the Fly were best times.

“Chris McGue and Joe Gerard had two lifetime best swims.”
