No 1 Chesterton Boys win Sectional opener

Back To Front Page

The top-ranked Chesterton boys soccer team challenged, and challenged, and challenged again before finally denting the scoreboard.

The Trojans dominated possession and scoring chances, but it took until 15 minutes into the second half before Chesterton scored and beat Michigan City 1-0 in the opening round of the IHSAA Portage Sectional.

“We tried focusing on the early goal in the first half, but Michigan City did an amazing job holding a defensive shape,” Chesterton coach Lucas Sabedra said. “We had a lot of opportunities throughout the whole game. We hit the post four times and had 20 shots on goal.”

Andrew VanNoort crossed a ball into the box that found the head of Zack Bowser who flicked the ball past Wolves’ goalkeeper Evan Bush for the game’s only goal.

“After we scored Michigan City continued to play excellent defense and keep us out of the goal,” Sabedra said. “Give them a lot of credit.”

The Trojans will play tonight in the semifinals of the Portage Sectional against Crown Point beginning at 7 p.m.
