The Pirates were worried.

The Chesterton wrestling team battled until the final second before dropping a 40-28 Duneland Athletic Conference match on Wednesday night to Merrillville.

“Merrillville is such a well coached team that knows what position they are supposed to be in,” Chesterton coach Chris Joll said. “It’s hard and that’s ok with me. We really competed in most matches.”

Danny Cutter got the Trojans off to a solid start with a 2-0 victory at 195. Connor Smith followed that with a fall at 220 over Kamal Richardson (1:08).

“Danny Cutter got us off to a great start,” Joll said. “Connor had a nice match where he got out of his comfort zone to score some points tonight before getting the pin.”

After a forfeit win for the Pirates at 285 was followed by a 3-1 win from Chesterton’s Jack Tolin at 106.

“Jack Tolin is good,” Joll said. “The kid he wrestled is good. That’s a good win.”

Another forfeit win by the Pirates was followed by a 7-5 win from Eric Kramer at 120 and a fall victory for Mike Double at 132.

“We got great matches from Eric Kramer and Mike Double to keep us in the thing,” Joll said. “Guys we haven’t always counted on for big wins kept us in it. Those are guys who don’t get enough credit for what they are doing.”

Merrillville would take control of the match with three straight wins before back-to-back wins from Sawyer Hallas (160) and Alex Katsafaros (170) pulled the Trojans within six points.

“We’ve been winning a lot of matches that traditionally we haven’t won,” Joll said. “We don’t always win close matches and we’ve been doing more of that lately.”

A fall victory by Merrillville’s Matthew Hollins at 182 set the final score.
